Wool Freight War Dooms Liner

(M.Z. Press Association-Copyright)

LONDON, March 15.

The New Zealand Shipping Company has decided to withdraw the passenger-cargo liner Remuera from service towards the end of this year.

The ship made six round trips from Britain to New Zealand since the company bought her from Cunard in

October, 1961. She was formerly the Parthia and cost about £750,000. The company spent more than £500,000 converting her to carry 350 passengers instead of 250, and renamed her.

The Remuera is being withdrawn because she is operating unprofitably. The Remuera was well supported by passengers to and from New Zealand.

However, the cost of her conversion proved greater since 1961 lncreases jn operating costs have been

made and, in addition, wool cargoes have been substantially reduced by uneconomic competition. As wool was to have been the bulk of her cargo the Remuera has suffered considerably through loss of

freight earnings. The combination of adverse circumstances has made it impossible for her to be run to advantage in the New Zea-land-United Kingdom trade.
