Telephone Ministry By Methodists

Machines for the Methodist Central Mission’s telephone ministry arrived in Christchurch on Wednesday, and tests are being made. It was hoped that the full service would begin in about 10 days, the superintendent of the mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham) said. A meeting of voluntary workers would be held next Thursday evening, he said. Persons would be needed to answer a special telephone at the mission between 5 p.m. and midnight. They would also be needed for a “trouble team,” which would be on call to answer any need at any time of the night There was some difficulty in getting suitable voluntary workers, as it was not yet quite clear what the demands on the service would be. A training course in counselling for voluntary workers was planned for May. The course would be conducted by the Rev. D. O. Williams, principal of the Trinity Methodist Theological College, Auckland.
