TROTTING Australians Pay 850Gns For Great Star

Great Star, which was offered on belialf of the Roydon Lodge Stud Ltd., Yaldhurst, will go to Australia. This 15-year-old daughter of Gold Bar and Spangled Maiden brought top price of 850gns at the annual sale of standardbred brood mares, racing and untried stock held in Christchurch yesterday.

Great Star had a wellgrown chestnut filly by Thurber Frost at foot and had a positive test to Light Brigade. She was knocked down to Mr G. A. Templeton, of Christchurch, who was acting for Mr F. Dove, of Melbourne. The Sydney trainer, W. Picken, went to 750gns to secure the former good race mare Overdrive, which had a colt foal at foot by Thurber Frost and in foal again to King Creed. This 10-year-old mare was offered on behalf of Mr S. T. Webster, of Ashburton. Altogether Australians spent 3295gns to secure 11 lots. Local buyers were also fairly active. They bought 20 lots for a total of 3845gns. Dull Patch There was a dull patch in the sale when the final lots in the main catalogue were offered. But interest heightened again when the first four lots in the supplementary catalogue were offered to dissolve the partnership of Mr Q. Donald and the estate of H. Murphy, of Martinborough. Bidding on the seven-year-old Light Brigade mare Lileas ceased at 520gns. She was knocked down to Mr R. Crogan, of Sydney. Mr C. L. Rhodes, of Christchurch, paid 675gns for a well-developed yearling colt by U. Scott from Lillium. A two-year-old brother to this youngster bought 400gns. He was one of two lots purchased by Mr S. Wheatley, of Woodend. Spring Garrison, an acceptor for the Fendalton Handicap at Addington Race-

way tonight, brought top price among the racing stock. Mr C. McDonald, of Christchurch. had to go to 575gns to secure this five-year-old Garrison Hanover gelding which was offered on behalf of Mr J. MacG. Inglis and the estate of D. Huckle, Nelson. The sale was conducted by National Mortgage and Agency Company of NewZealand, Ltd., and Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd.
