Lyttelton Buttes

Sir.—Christchurch Transport Board buses and railway trains are giving Lyttelton a duplicate service. This involves two public bodies and will eventually be financed by taxpayers and ratepayers. The situation is more anomalous because Lyttelton residents do not contribute to the transport board through rates. It would be more practical to have New Zealand Railways Road Services buses running as a complementary service to train*. Statistics will show peak and quiet times and a working arrangement could be evolved. For example, trains at peak hours and buses in the interim. Road Services buses would solve the Heathcote transport problem which will occur if trains are reduced. Mr McAlpine, Minister of Transport, was recently reported as being eager to end “wasteful transport use.” Christchurch has begun one.—Yours, etc.. TRANSPORT ENTHUSIAST. March 13. 1964.
