Take-over Bids For Newspaper
Sir, —A correspondent writes that he would like a choice of morning newspaper. He has expensive tastes. The community cost of a newspaper is much more than 3d —at tile very least because newspapers. like all enterprises, employ persons who have been educated and considerably maintained at the public expense. I still think that daily newspapers are best as local monopolies for several reasons. Who controls tile newspaper is a seimrate matter. But it seems an anomaly that newspapers as the most important of all educational institutions should not be under at least some amount of public control or supervision, no matter who owns the shares.— Yours, etc., P WILLIAMS March 12, 1964
