Doctors And Alcohol
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. March 13. A prominent Sydney doctor, Dr. C. R. Hustable, has called on the medical profession to revolt against the liquor trade in the same way as it has against the cigarette industry. Writing in the latest “Medical Journal of Australia,” he described alcohol as a “national curse,” and alcoholism as “more sinister and significant” than excessive smoking. He said Australia’s growing army of alcoholics—estimated at 300,000 —was a matter of grave national importance, yet, although addiction to alcohol was worse than addiction to opium, it was not regarded nearly so seriously.
