DENIAL OF SPYING
U.S. Demands R 866 Crew (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 12. The United States State Department reiterated today that the American R 866 which flew over Germany on Tuesday was not on a spy mission and said there was “no excuse for the precipitate Soviet action’’ in shooting it down. The State Department called in the Soviet Ambassador (Mr Anatoly Dobrynin* and told him the United States expected the Soviet authorities to return the three men of the crew “without delay.’’ Mr Dobrynin spent 15 minutes with Mr Llewellyn Thompson. the former United States Ambassador to Moscow and the Department’s chief expert on Soviet affairs. The State Department spokesman said the United States still had no official information from the Soviet Union about the men and did not know whether they were dead or alive.
