EXPORT LAMB

Price Rise On Monday

Prices for all weights and grades of lambs killed for export in the South Island will be raised by id per lb from Monday. This applies to both ■woolly and shorn lambs. A meat industry spokesman said last night that the rise was “in expectation” of a firmer trend in prices in the United Kingdom in the future. All ewe prices will also advance by a similar figure. This adjustment is being made in the face of a strong inquiry for mutton and higher bids by buyers. Another meat company spokesman said the outlook for meat generally looked pretty bright at the moment. There was a world demand for e we mutton and the market was very strong. Interest in mutton was coming from the Continent, the United Kingdom and the eastern market There was also a very good demand for beef, interest coming from fresh quarters. Europe was now more interested in New Zealand beef than she had been. The basic reason for this seemed to be the short supplies available from th e Argentine. The new prices are:— Woolly Lambs.—Prime: 20 to 281 b 20Jd; 29 to 361 b, 19ld; 37 !° £!!?• 18d: 43 to “lb, 16J; 51 to 561 b. 14£d.
