Annual Meetings Of C.W.I.S

Many Country Women’s Institutes in the movement’s Canterbury federation have held annual meetings recently to review the past year’s work and elect officers for this year. An active year was reported by the various circles of the South Brighton C.W.I. at the annual meeting. Donations had been made to the Leper Association, the Arts Council, the Salvation Army, and Save the Children Fund, and a child in Hong Kong had been sponsored. Much welfare work had been done locally. Trophies, presented by Mrs A. B. McDiarmid, were:— Jones Rose Bowl (arts and crafts), Mrs L. Beswick; Ogden trophy (gardening), Mr J. J. .Meluish; Hodgkinson trophy (cooking), Mrs Beswick; most entries without a prize, Miss M. Smith. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs A. R. Gould; committee. Mesdames L. Beswick, J. Beumelberg, A. Broadbelt, T. Burrell, D. Griffiths, M. Milligan, W. McDoweU, A. Pontifex, H. Stevens, Miss B. Innes. TE PIRITA A donation had been sent to the Aged People’s Welfare Council. For roll call at the meeting, each member suggested a three-month programme for the institute. The following officers were elected:—President, Miss K. Inch; committee, Mesdames J. Brownlee, M. J. Fay, J. Gordon, and M. J. Adamson. MAIREHAU The branch assisted in street appeals for Red Cross, Save the Children Fund, Aged People’s Welfare Council, and Foundation for the Blind, and have made gifts to the Red Cross, the Nurse Maude Association, and the leper fund during the year.

Mrs E. C. McKenzie won the Ogden trophy for the. best poem and Mrs I. Cooke and Miss A. Ormandy gained places in the handcraft section of the federation’s spring show. Officers elected were:— President, Mrs J. R. Taylor; committee, Mesdames D. V. Avis, J. Boyd, C. B. Clarke, H. B. Curtis, A. H. Kime, H. Litoff, E. C. McKenzie, A. C. Richards, S. O. Stevens, and the Misses A. Ormandy and E. Willetts. GREENDALE During the year the branch collected £lO5 for C.0.R.5.0., and 42 dozen eggs were sent to the Aged People’s Welfare Council. Donations were made to Heritage, Festival of Talent, Pennies for Friendship, and Templeton Hospital. Magazines were given to St. Winifred’s Hospital, and parcels were sent to a child the institute has been sponsoring.

Mrs R. C. Ridgen won trophies for the most points in handcraft and the cut flower section. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs N. Shipley: committee, Mesdames M. Adams, R. Cooper, E. J. Ridgen, G. B. Shipley, H. B. Shipley, N. J. Whyte, N. Wouters. HILLSBOROUGH

The Hillsborough and Heathcote Country Women’s Institute trophies were presented at the annual meeting as follows: Anderson trophy for most points in all sections, Mrs J. Brooks; sewing trophy, Mrs W. Burnip; trophy for best bloom, Mrs J. Brooks; homecraft trophy, Mrs W. G. Louden; trophy for most points without winning a prize, Mrs M. Mander. Officers elected were: president, Mrs W. G. Louden; committee, Mesdames W. H. Eastwick, D. Aspinall, T. Bishop, L. M. Kellaway, A. Frandsen, P. Harrison, T. Higgins. W. Laing, D. Mahoney, D. Peddie, B. McNicol, M. Petheram, R. Ward, and Miss G. Davidson.
