COAL STUDY HELPED

Fellowship Given

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 12. Mr W. A. Stevenson, of Howick, who has been actively connected with opencast mining in Waikato for many years, has provided the funds for a fellowship to accelerate coal research. The Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) and the Minister of Science (Mr Talboys), announcing this today, expressed their appreciation of Mr Stevenson’s offer because "apart from the intrinsic value of the fellowship, this demonstration of faith in the future of coal as one of our most important indigenous primary industries is most encouraging.” The type of investigation proposed includes research into hot briquetting of subbituminous coal, pellitising, and pulverised coal firing. The Stevenson Fellowship will be used to appoint a chemist or chemical engineer as a research fellow and a technical staff to assist him. He will work at the Dominion Laboratory, Gracefield, beside others doing similar research and will have the use of all the specialised services of the laboratory.

The investigations will extend the scope of the research and development work on coal already in progress and will be complementary to it A suitable fellow, either from New Zealand or overseas, will be appointed as soon.as possible and technicians will be recruited.
