MARLBOROUGH TOURNEY
Upset In Men’s Singles With record entries from as far afield as Christchurch and Nelson, the annual Marlborough hardcourt tennis championships played at Kaikoura during the week-end offered plenty of Interest. Women's play provided no upsets and seeded players reached the semi-finals. J Shanahan, of Nelson, played off the final with Kaikoura’s R. A. Smith. But in the men’s singles, the Cust player, L. Elliot, came through from the first round to meet the first seed player, B. W. Croft, in the final. On h-s way through Elliot beat R Herd, the fourth seed. 9-3, and L. Martin, the second seed. 6-1. 6-0 An upset In the men s doubles occurred when B. C. Croft and T. Harneiss. last year's winners, were beaten by t> Winstanley and L. Elliot. 9-8 G. S Eaton and D France were beaten by J- Reader and W. A. Jamieson in the third round. 9-6 In the final of the men . singles Elliot beat W. Croft with some brilliant court work, 3-6. 6-4, 6-4. In a hard fought final in the men's doubles, L. Martin and P. Boatwood beat Christie and Mcßae. 6-4. 6-L The women’s singles saw Shanahan victorious over R. A Smith, 6-3. 6-2. and in the doubles Shanahan and P George won from L. Rix on and S. Peters. 9-7. 6-4. In the final of the men s plate A J. Smith and E H. Comer beat P. Lawson and M u Eaton. 6-4. 6-1. In the women s plate J. Stagg and B. Cheesman beat P. .Payne and M. Hamilton. 6-3, 6-4.
