SOUND SALE FOR EWES AT COALGATE FAIR

Both two-tooth ewes and adult ewes met a sound sale at the early Coalgate ewe fair on Friday, when values realised were in line with those of other recent fairs and were markedly above those realised at the same fair last year. Most of the yarding comprised Romneys, with only a few- scattered pens of fine wool sheep coming forward in both the adult and the twotooth ewe sections. This year, a total of 5469 ewes came forward, comprising 1408 twotooths and 4031 four and five-year-old ewes. Last year, the entry totalled 5199 and was made up of 1599 two-tooths and 3600 older ewes.

The top price recorded on Friday was £5 6s fo ra pen of 93 Romney two-tooths. entered by F. R. Hayes, of Riversleigh. Mr Hayes also sold another pen of the same type of sheep for £5 3s and .for the 176 two-tooths he sold, he averaged £5 4s. Last year, the top price was 86s. Mr Hayes also sold 136 five-year Romneys at 635. When the quality of the offering is taken into account, prices, generally, were much on a par with those realised at Kaikoura and Ashburton. The average type of Romney two-tooth offered this year sold from 70s to 80s, while last year this type of ewe brought from 60s to 675. Four-year-old Romneys this year showed an increase of up to 10s, which was much the same as the five-year Romney ewes and the Romney two-'tooths.
