Obituary MR H. V. HAYWOOD

The superintendent of Paparua Prison, Mr Horace Victor Haywood, died in Christchurch yesterday after a brief illness. He was 63. Mr Haywood joined the Prisons Department in 1929 as a prison officer at Paparua. He remained there until 1950 when he was promoted to deputy - superintendent at Auckland Prison. In September, 1951, he was promoted to superintendent at Auckland.

His work with the department was recognised in 1957 when he was awarded the M.B.E. Last year, he was transferred back, to Christchurch as superintendent at Paparua. “Mr Haywood was a really •outstanding superintendent who has served his country well,” said the Secretary of Justice (Mr J. L. Robson) in a tribute yesterday. "He has been a rugged, and at times unorthodox, superintendent, but he always displayed compassion in carrying out his duties-”

Mr Haywood is survived by his widow. .
