World Trade Body Recommended
NEW YORK, Feb. 16. The trade gap between the industrialised and the developing nations would reach 20,000 million dollars within the next six years unless suitable action was taken, said a United Nations report. The report was prepared for a 122-nation United Nations conference and trade and development opening in Geneva on March 23, by its Argentine Secretary-General, Dr. Raul Prebisch. It recommended more United Nations responsibility, and found fault with

some aspects of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Dr. Prebisch said the conviction had grown that “some kind of new trade organisation is needed.” The Soviet bloc has been pressing for establishment of an international trade organisation as a specialised agency of the United Nations, but the West is cool towards this. Dr. Prebisch said G.A.T.T. had “important achievements” to its credit, but it had not been as effective for the developing countries as for the developed.
