RACING Foxy Boy Improves Record At Westport

(Frpm Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, February 16. , 1 wiee a winner and placed second in his only other start in October on Patterson Park, Foxy Boy supported the adage of horses for courses by taking the Robert Patterson Handicap in good style on the opening day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday.

The winner, a brown four-year-old gelding by Isaac of York from Foxy Girl, was turned out in good order by the Riccarton trainer, C. G. Humphries, for his wife.

Foxy Boy has raced consistently this season. He recorded an impressive performance, under vigorous riding by A. H. Eastwood, to get up in the last couple of strides and to snatch victory from Brown Watch, which appeared to have the race won 20 yards from home. Ran Wide

On Account led out, but went wide at the first bend and lost his place. Lola then held charge for three furlongs, being more, closely attended by Brown Watch, Meandering, Foxy Boy, On Account, Ups and Downs, and Picright. Brown Watch took over racing to the turn and appeared the winner, but Foxy Boy came fast on the outside to just get up.

Ups and Downs made up some ground for third ahead of Picright, with Lola, Meandering, On Account, Silverwood, Queen of Sheba, Golden Home, and Come on Boy finishing in that order.

There was a shower late In the afternoon, but the track was always fast. Rae’s Hope established, a new track record for seven furlongs when he went Imin 25 3-ssec in the McPadden Handicap, and Foxy Boy equalled the best figures for a mile when he won the Patterson Handicap in Imin 37 2-ssec.

The second leg, the J. J. Corry Handicap, saw a rather rugged finish in which the pair from N. T. Cowles’s Riccarton stable, Race Guide and Marlow, fought it out, with the former winning narrowly. Gold Shower finished a close third, but was relegated to fourth after an inquiry, and the top-weight, Matador, was promoted. The last named got a very poor run over the final stages and his rider, E. G. Low, had to change direction on two occasions. Rajah Dies Blue Harken fell . after travelling two furlongs and Rajah collapsed when returning to the birdcage and died from heart failure. Margaret York, Straight Forward, Matador, Gold Shower. Sumptuous, Rajah, Race Guide were the best placed early. The early order remained unchanged at the half, but Marlow had moved up from fairly well back and in a hard finish just failed to catch Race Guide. Straight Forward held on for fourth ahead of Margaret York, Tarboy, Aspasia (which lost several lengths when Blue Harken fell), and Sumptuous. Effortless Win Llansfair completely justified the confidence shown by supporters by winning the Trial Stakes No. 1 in effortleses style. The Llanstephan filly cut out the six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssec, good going on Patterson Park for maiden performers. Llansfair was closely attended for three furlongs by Many More, with a gap to Grand Harbour. Scroll

Beauty, Meadow Maid, Dawning Sky, Persian Sea, Our Tui, and Christine Mary. Llansfair put a break on the field at that stage and won with a lot in hand from the fast-finishing Grand Harbour. Persian Sea made up a little ground for third ahead of Meadow Maid. The others were well back. New Record The country trained Rae’s Hope cut four-fifths of a second off the course record for seven furlongs when he won the McPadden Handicap nicely from Garwan and Baywyn.

Never further back than fourth, Rae’s Hope took over at the home turn and although Garwan made a strong challenge over the last 50 yards, the Totara Flat horse held on well. Taxman made the pace a warm one for most of the way and, at the four, was closely attended by Rae’s Hope, Baywyn, Garwan, Argus, Silver Princess, and Serengeti. Rae's Hope ran clear in the straight and while Garwan loomed up ahead of the others his run had finished short of the post. Baywyn was a fair third ahead of Silver Princess, Taxman, Donna Gola, Prize Melody, Argus, Serengeti, Ben Blue, and Lady Denzil. First Time Easily

First Time gave C. G. Humphries his second training success of the day with a comfortable win in the Trial Stakes No. 2. Always well placed, the Summertime —Lady Selina three-year-old had a lot in hand at the finish after overhauling the pacemaker for most of the distance. Bona Fide, half way down ‘the straight. First Time looked one of the best maidens seen out at Patterson Park for some time. . Bona Fide was closely attended for most of the journey by Llanstar, First Time, and Grand Harbour. The last named held on well for third ahead of Llanstar, with Triple Link, Knight’s Revue, Messmaid, Our Tui, and Isaac’s Gold next. Best Finish In the best finish of the day, with five horses spread right across the track, Silver Shell gave the Totara Flat trainer, W. Dudley, his second win of the meeting in the Trilford Handicap. Blocked for an opening on the winner, G. W. Mein took Silver Shell to the outside and he just got up.to beat Prize Girl, Awakeri, and His Host, with Windsor Castle and Pepe not far away. • Awakeri' led cut and, at the three, was closely attended by Windsor Castle, His Host, Caibalina, Prize Girl, and Silver Shell. The field tightened on Awakeri in the last 100 yards and Silver Shell and Prize Girl got up to head the pacemaker. Results:— TRIAL STAKES No. 1. £150; 6f.—l/1 LLANSFAIR (13) 8-4 D. N.
