OUT OF DANGER

Sydenham Well Placed Sydenham was well placed to take first innings points against Riccarton when it was only seven runs behind Riccarton with four wickets in hand at stumps at Sydenham Park after an entertaining and enterprising day’s cricket. The teams scored 439 runs in the day’s play even though the pitch, which was unusually green, gave considerable assistance to the faster bowlers. Wickets Tumbled Riccarton started very badly, losing four wickets for seven runs against the attack of P. and J. Thomas. P. Thomas took three for three in his first 11 balls but a good partnership between G. R. McAulay and D. Stead and then some aggressive hitting by I. McK. Sinclair and untidy fielding by Sydenham allowed Riccarton to reach the reasonable total of 223. The 16-year-old. Stead batted sensibly and attractively for 51 and Sinclair driving and cutting strongly hit a very fine 63. Sydenham, too, began badly losing two wickets for 20 runs by a solid partnership between W. Thomson and R. Thomas and then some very forthright hitting by D. L. Gallop took it out of danger.

Thomson Impressive Thomson, very sound on defence, again batted impressively. Gallop's 77 not out was an odd mixture of streaky shots and powerful and well-timed pulls and drives. But it was a welcome return to batting success for him.

J. W. Kiddey came in for some heavy punishment, particularly from Gallop, but his figures of three tor 108 were not realistic, many runs coming from miss-hits. The umpires were Messrs F. Goodall and J. Owen. Scores:— SYDENHAM First Innings I. R. Hartland, c Sinclair, b Kiddey .. ..14 J. Tucker, b Mclntyre .. 0 W. Thomson, c McAulay, b Kiddey .. .. 66 R.
