FORCE FOR CYPRUS
“N.Z. Might Contribute” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 16. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said yesterday that New Zealand might contribute to a Commonwealth force in Cyprus. He was commenting on a Washington message reporting that the latest formula put forward to ease the crisis in Cyprus was for a Commonwealth force to keep the peace on the island. Mr Holyoake'said that New Zealand had joined in discussions on the form the Commonwealth peace force in Cyprus might take. “The whole matter has yet to be definitely resolved,” he said. “I have not yet had a report on the talks between the British Prime Minister (Sir Alec Douglas-Home) and President Johnson, which were to have dealt with this question.” Asked whether New Zealand felt It could make a meaningful contribution to keeping the peace in Cypnis and other former colonial trouble spots, Mr Holyoake said: “Our main commitment must be to South-east Asia. “Militarily, anything we Could do might not seem meaningful, but it could be in a broader sense.”
