Traffic Problems
Sir, —I found "Ham’s” observations on this subject interesting. No. question about it, there is a tremendous waste here in motoring. If anyone cares to observe on every week-day, he will see that about nine cars in every 10 contain only one person each. I read that something may have to be done about it overseas in heavilycongested areas. I contend that this country is completely over-motorised, considering its economic condition. Fancy having to borrow overseas to keep up exchange, while we are in company with Canada, the second most highly-motorised population per capita in the world! Several things could be done. For example, I would raise the minimum age several years for driving licences. . There is no need for so many teen-agers to be driving—they are quite able to cycle or walk more, as plenty of older people do.— Yours, etc., WITHIN REASON. February 16, 1964.
