Farrer’s Brilliant 144 Fine Send-off To Tour

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, February 14. By scoring 357 for seven declared in 299 minutes the South African cricket side began its New Zealand tour in handsome fashion against Northern Districts at Seddon Park. Hamilton, today. The highlight was an innings of 144 by W. S. Farrer who, with his captain, T. L. Goddard, and later with K. G. Bland, produced some excellent batting.

Northern, left with just under an hour’s hatting, had scored 37 for one wicket at stumps. From the first over when Goddard took six runs off M. C. Langdon, the South African batsmen were on top. Farrer joined Goddard after E. J. Barlow had been dismissed for 18. and immediately attacked the bowling. Indicating what was to come, trie first 50 came up In even time. The rate increased as the Farrer-God-dard 50 partnership was soon hoisted. 100 In 89 Minutes Goddard straight drove offspinner N. Puna for six, and brought up his half-century and the first South African 100 with a pull for four off Puna. Both had taken 89 minutes. Although the Northern Districts captain, B. H. Pairaudeau, was continuously changing his bowlers it made not the slightest difference to Goddard and Farrer. In the two hours to lunch 136 runs were scored, Goddard on 63 and Farrer 52. After lunch Goddard tried to crack every ball to the boundary but he failed to get over an off-break from Puna and hit the ball straight to Langdon at point. He batted 130 minutes and hit one six and six fours. Farrer kept on his merry way, although his new partner, P. L. Carlestein, was worried by Puna. The young Poverty Bay leg spinner, R. Penharrow, bowled well in his opening spell and he gained his reward when Carlstein left his crease to drive. He was beaten in the air and E. C. Petrie completed a smart stumping. Lofted a Catch Farrer, playing all bowling well, raced to 144 when, attempting to force the pace even more, he lofted the new ball bowler. Langdon,

into the safe hands of Pairaudeau at cover. His 144 had been a delightful knock, lasting 272 minutes and including 15 boundaries. J. H. B. Waite and D. L. Lindsay continued to score at a brisk rate, Lindsay, in particular, cover driving well. Lindsay kept up the scoring rate and the total bounded to 350 in 292 minutes. However, Lindsay’s effort came to a close when he mistimed one from Puna and was bowled. With the fall of the wicket, Goddard declared. W. P. Bradburn and B. Dunning opened the Northern innings and Dunning was always in trouble to both the South African opening bowlers, J. T. Partridge and Barlow. With the score at 14 after 25 minutes, Dunning tried to hook a short ball from Barlow. The ball hit bigh up on the bat .and he spooned a catch to Farrer. Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA First Innings E. J.
