Society Hopes To Save New Brighton Pier
A society incorporated in Christchurch this week has as one of its main aims the restoration of the New Brighton, pier, which for sometime has been condemned by the Christchurch City Council. The society has been called the. New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Protection Society. It is expected that one of its first tasks will be to raise funds so that the pier can be restored as a feature of New Brighton. Mr P. D. Dunbar, chairman of the committee, which
was set up at a public meeting about six months ago to consider ways of preserving the pier, said yesterday that the committee had now taken out articles of incorporation. This was desirable because the committee had lacked the backing, the solidarity, and the authority which the newly incorporated society will have to carry out its work.
“Much has been done since last August in investigating the rehabilitation of the pier,” said Mr Dunbar. “The results are encouraging, but whatever the future of the pier, it is felt the society could have a very long life since much is to be done before the foreshore is developed into the positive asset it could be—an asset which it would be criminal to neglect.” The society will call a public meeting about the beginning of April at which it will report on the committee’s progress since the first public meeting. All interested members of the public will also be invited to join the society to assist its work in preserving the pier and developing the foreshore.
