FOOD-PRICE INDEX
Point Rise In January The all-food group of the consumers’ price index rose by one point between December and January, according to details released yesterday by the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). There were, however, off-set-ting rises and falls in the tor dividual sub-groups. The fruits, vegetables, and eggs sub-group added 3J points, and the other food sub-group added half a point. The meat and fish sub-group dropped 2-j points. From individual items or groups of items the most substantial rise was the 9J points from seasonal fruits and vegetables. A significant drop came from beef meat items (li points), mutton meat items (1), eggs (W, potatoes (31), and frozen peas (If). Because- the rise in the price of sugar occurred after the middle of the month the January index reflects very little of this rise. The main effect will be shown in the February index.
