Alleged False Pretences The accused cashed two valueless cheques and attemiped to cash a third on November 22, a jury in the Supreme Court was told yesterday, when the trial began of Peter John Joseph Turner, aged 20, on two charges of false pretences and one of attempted false pretences on that date. Mr Justice Wilson is on the bench. Mr N. W- Williamson appears. for the Crown, and Mr R. L. Kerr for Turner. Mr Williamson said it was alleged that Turner bought a dress ring' and a key ring from Farren Price Jewellers and received about £3 change from a cheque for £8 5s which he presented in payment. This cheque was on a form stamped “Franklin and Glassenbury,” and signed “A. Shaw.”

On the same day he bought a shirt for £2 5s from Quality Tailors, Ltd., with a cheque for £9 10s and received £7 5s change. Also bn November 22, said Mr Williamson, Turner selected two records at the D.I.C. valued at £2 3s 6d. Payment was offered through a cheque for £5 10s. This was sent upstairs to the accounts department, and Turner left without taking the records or change. Employees of Farren Price Jewellers and Quality Tailors, Ltd., gave evidence along those lines. They were unable to identify Turner as the man who tendered the cheques. A shop assistant employed at the DJ.G. record bar said that it was Turner who selected the records and asked if he could pay by cheque, and his companion had given the cheque. The trial will continue today.
