Train’s Trip To Country The regular afternoon passenger train from Christchurch to Rangiora yesterday left a trail of fires from Bryndwr to Flaxton. The train, pulled by a steam AB locomotive, left on time, at 4 40 pjn. At 4.58 p.m., the Christchurch Fire Brigade was called to a grass fire on the railway line between Glandovey and Wairakei roads. At 5.7 p.m., the brigade was called to grass on fire in Papanui on the railway line at Tuckers road. The next call was to Radcliffe’s road, Styx. At 5.23 p.m., the call was to a grass fire on the railway line at Chaneys corner. Another call to the brigade came from Kainga soon afterwards, and later yet another grass fire was reported at Flaxton. „. Fires « the grass beside me railway line north of Kaiapoi were reported to the Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade, but the brigade was not called out. The Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to areas of grass on fire beside the railway line, and the Rangiora County Council fire tender was also called out. The fires could have been caused by a faulty fire-box on the engine, bad coal, a defective screen in the funnel, or a number of other factors, a Railways Department spokesman said.
