(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
MIAMI BEACH, FeK 12.
. The world heavy-weight boxing champion, Sonny Liston, disclosed a “secret weapon’-’ in today’s work-out in preparation for his title defence against Cassius Clay on February 25, United Press International reported. During three rounds of sparring with the former light heavy-weight challenger, Jesse Bowdry, the champion exhibited a “sneaker right” in public for the first time.
This punch is not thrown from far back like the usual right lead, but shoots out un-
expectedly when his stance brings the right shoulder about half the distance it normally takes before a boxer throws a right lead. Liston used the punch once in each of the three rounds which made a total of 76 rounds he has boxed in preparation for the title fight. The doctor for the Miami Beach Boxing Commission (Dr. Alexander Robbins), after giving -Liston his physical examination, said: “He is one of the finest athletes I have ever examined.” . Clay did not spar today but he will resume his training tomorrow.
