"Opossum" Stared Back In Spite Of Three Shots

(Neu, Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Feb. 12. A Mossbum man has been troubled with opossums, which have cleaned up any bread left in his mail box. He decided to put an end to it. Armed with a .22 rifle and an electric torch, he crept out one evening recently and, from a strategic distance flashed his torch on to the mail box. In the middle of the beam two beady eyes shone back at him. He fired.

He shone the torch again. The two eyes gleamed back at him. He fired another shot—and a third. The eyes continued to stare. The marksman investigated. Sitting on top of . the box was his electric toaster, which he had sent into the electrician for repairs. It had been placed there, unwrapped by the mail delivery. The electric torch, shining on to the chromium comer, had caught the reflection of the metal and given it the appearance of two unwinking eyes. There were three bullet holes through the toaster, just exactly where the opossum’s head would have been.

The toaster is back in the electrician’s for further repairs.
