Accommodation Taxed At Linwood H.S.
The roll for 1964 standing at 1016 pupils, Linwood High School was severely taxed for accommodation, said the headmaster (Mr P. A. Hickling) in his report to the latest meeting of the. board. He would be pleased , when the new permanent rooms were available, Mr Hickling said. It was not yet known how many of the present prefabs the school would be able to retain.
Work- on the new classrooms- was going ahead steadily. The most urgent needs in' buildings were the enlargement of the library and the assembly hall. ’The amount for the pro-, posed new gymnasium now stood at £3500 and was held by the Parent-Teacher Association. It was hoped to have £5OOO by the end of the year, Mr Hickling said. The National Party had promised to offer a £2 for £1 subsidy up-
to £9OOO, which would mean £14,000 available- for the building. Proposed sketch plans were examined by the board.
Mr Hickling then reported on school examination successes for 1963. One hundred and 12 pupils had passed School Certificate and three were having a recount. University Entrance had been accredited to 59 pupils, and three were successful when they sat the examination. Two pupils passed entrance .scholarship with credit.
On staffing, Mr Hickling said that the school was fully staffed for 1964, with 41 permanent teachers and three temporary teachers. Some part-time relief to. which the school wag entitled would be welcome in the over-large lower sixth forms.
