AROUND THE GREENS

Main fixtures for the week, February 13 to 19 inclusive, are;—Today: Allday tournament at Cashmere; electric light tournament at Beckenham. Tomorrow: Entries close for champion of champion pairs. Saturday: Centre open pairs (third day); Langley Cup match v. Ashburton at Rakaia; all-day tournaments at Papanui and St. Albans (also on Sunday). Sunday: Tournaments at Canterbury, Kaiapoi, Rakaia, R.S.A., Sheffield, Southbridge and Woolston W.M.C, Monday: Electric light tournaments at Beckenham and Sydenham. Tuesday: Final mid-week friendly matches; electric light tournaments at Cashmere and Redcliffs. Wednesday: secretaxies-treas-urers’ tournament at United; all-day tournament at Lincoln; electric light tournaments at Kaiapoi W.M.C. and South Brighton.

The championships at the Woolston club are now drawing to a close. In tire final of the pairs, L. Cockroft and J. Young beat H. Maloney and T. Thomas, and the winning team in the fours was N. Wales, M. Robson, G. E. Hannah and Young. In the final, they defeated Maloney, F. Oakley, W. Shepherd and Thomas. After beating Cockroft in a semifinal, Robson will meet Wales in the singles final. The final of the colts’ singles will be played tonight between B. Malzard and. F. Hardman.

In the semi-finals of the Dallington club’s championship pairs A. Grade and D. Stuart beat T. Joyce and R. Pirrie, 21-14, and R. Lancaster and A. Kirk beat G. Rowland and A. Wright on an extra head, 21-20. Finalists in the fours championship are teams skipped by Pirrie (two lives) and L. McKetndry.

The winners of the Canterbury club’s championship pairs and fours were found last week. In the final of the pairs, F. Lees and G. •Craig (skip) beat S. O’Callaghan and M. Kilpatrick (skip) decisively. There wais some excellent leading by Lees and O’Callaghan, but Kilpatrick was well below his usual form. The final of the fours, between S. Lockhart, J. Petre, R. Richards and C. Ashton (skip) and N. Boon, D. O’Neil, P. Gaffney and J. Turpin (skip), was exciting. Ashton gained an early advantage and at the end of 14 heads was leading, 17-11. However, Turpin scored a six on the fifteenth end to level scores and then took the lead. But Ashton's steady drawing enabled him to win narrowly.

In a championship pairs semi-final at Mt. Pleasant, F. L. Murray and L. Morgan had a dour struggle with A. Maurice and W. Craib. One down on the 19th head, Craib collected a lovely five shots but Morgan, not to be outdone, got the five back on the 20th. In attempting to remove the shot bowl on the 21st to get two to win, Craib took out one of his own. Murray and Morgan went on to win the final

against J. Williamson and E. Ayres, to win the title twice in successive years. The championship fours final was won by A. Johnson, J. Power, A. Church and W. Keenlyside, who beat Ayres, S. Grove, Williamson and J. O’Rourke.

Two of the South Brighton club’s championships have been decided. In the pairs final between J. Hewitson and T. Dixon (skip), and W. McDowall and L. Harris (skip), Harris made a good Start and led, 10-2. Dixon gradually improved but went down, 15-19. The fours was won by R. Hewitt’s team of P.. Meier, G. Crockett, and J. Clegg, who defeated a strong rink, D. Heller. R. Trist, J. Hewitson and T. Dixon (skip). .

There was a play-off in the Returned Services elimination tournament to find a Christchurch representative four for the New Zealand R.S.A. championships at Tauranga next month. The only two teams with four wins were A. Archer, P. Edgington, E. Fox, and N. McNab (skip), and D. Woolford, B. McManus, F. Hickman and D. Finnic (skip). In the play-off of seven ends, Finnie led by one shot after six. McNab evened on the seventh and at the extra end, Archer won by two points.

Ftoailisits have come through three of the Fendalton club’s championships— open pairs (J. K. Burtt—S. Boddiinigton and C. S. Peaite—R. P. Jones); junior singles (M. Milner and the winner between T. LockK. Burtt); colts singles (Lock and R. I. McGregor)

Winners of the Shirley club competitions are: firet-year player, H. D. Swallow; dub colt, G. Rae; pairs, G. Hunter and C. V. Gallagher (skip). The final between Rae and L. Pearce in the colt competition was notable for the fine display of drawing by both players.

The Sumner club last week reported, in error, that L. C. Terrell beat W. E. Turland in a singles match at the club. It was E. Stoneman who won the match.

Langley Cup Team
