TROTTING Orbiter And Rebel For Brighton Club Double

Orbiter is expected to win again in the New Brighton Cup at Addington Raceway on Saturday. This race is the first leg of the double at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting. The field of 13 includes a high proportion of form horses and although Orbiter may start favourite, there is certain to be strong support for at least eight of his rivals, any one of which could come out on top if favoured with a good run.

‘Orbiter has been twice unplaced in 12 starts this season and he has won six times over varying distances. He has shown outstanding staying form and if he can secure a clear run, he should be the hardest to beat. He looked desperately unlucky at Addington on January 2 when he became hopelessly placed on the inside. He finished with a tremendous burst for third behind Great Credit and Deft, but the race was as good as over before he saw daylight.

Great Credit will make his first appearance since he ■won the Dunedin Festival Cup Final at Forbury Park. He will start from 36 yards on his own which could help him begin better than when he has lined up among other horses. Great Credit recorded a fine effort to win at Forbury Park. He was well back until the half-mile and then covered extra ground to be handy turning for home. Then he ran the last furlong most determinedly to have his rivals well covered at the finish. Great Credit had always looked to be one of the most promising handicap horses in commission, but tardy beginnings more often than not ruined his chances. Great Credit will not be set an easy task, but if the pace is easy early and he can make up his handicap without too much effort he should be too strong in stamina for most of the race. Gay Robin will also be in demand. Gay Robin has won five races this season, two of them being over two miles. He raced last on January 2 when he was successful at Addington. Gay Robin has a record of tain 18 2-ssec for the distance of Saturday’s race and if he reproduces that time, he will have most of the back markers struggling. Terrace Dale will have to be respected. She was a shade disappointing at For-

bury Park, but in two of her races she recorded sound placings. The Zancara mare is a grand stayer and a splendid front-runner. If she is allowed to make her own rules, she will be one of the hardest to catch and she could easily bring about the defeat of some of her more-favoured opponents. Deft was disappointing after her first-night placing i at Forbury Park but she did I not settle down well after I that race. She is much bet- : ter than her two most recent efforts suggest and she could return to form early. Won At Forbury Bonnieburn and Cheta both won at Forbury Park after some sound racing at their previous starts. They could add interest to the finish. With Inglemead they appeal most of the others on the front. Chiffon, Flying Note and Safe Return, on 24 yards, have good recent form to recommend them. Chiffon beat Flying Note in the Consolation Race at Forbury Park on February 1; the same night. Safe Return beat all but Great Credit in the Dunedin Festival Cup Final. Safe Return appeals most of the trio and it will not surprise if he takes a prominent part in the finish. The Autumn Handicap, the second leg of the double, has also drawn an open field. Rebel, which will have his

first start since being trained by C. R. Berkett, could make amends for defeats at Forbury Park. He looked unlucky on the second night when he finished third after a bad check early. Rebel looks reasonably placed on 12 yards and if he reproduces his best form, he should be hard to beat. Chesterfield, a winner at three of his four starts in the spring, is certain to make a bold showing. He has been off the scene since he was injured on the New Zealand Cup day in November. He is reported to have done well lately and from the front his chances must be highly regarded. The bracket of Our Jimmy and White World must be respected. Our Jimmy has not struck a weaker field this season and in spite of a rather dismal showing on the last night at Forbury Park, he must be given a chance. He worked solidly on Tuesday morning and might not be so keen on Saturday. White World has broken badly in her recent races, but Could soon return to form. She is too good to take lightly. Uteena and Dreaming are two smart trotters on the front and Flying Maiden and Doctor Kyle are two capable horses on 12 and 24 yards respectively. Both were well beaten on the last night at Forbury Park, although Flying Maiden went quite well to finish fourth. She has won at Addington earlier in her career and might be prominent. However, it is hard to see her beating Rebel.

New Brighton Scratchings Scratchings for the New Brighton meeting at Addington Raceway on Saturday are:— Marine Handicap: Wildwood Chief. Final Handicap: Willycan.
