Poliomyelitis
Sir.—ln your leading article on Tuesday about poliomyelitis you say credit must be given to Dr Sabin, the American who discovered the vaccine. According to "Margin of Safety” by John Rowan Wilson, which is the story of the fight against polio. Dr. Sabin had Russian origins, a Russian name and he spoke Russian well. It was Dr. Sabin who got the’ Soviet Union to embark on. mass trials. In fact the clini-' cal trials of the Sabin vaccine carried out by the Soviet Union have no parallel in the history of the' world. Wilson says the trials, were breath-taking, covering l millions of people over vast, areas. The Americans had 1 been clinging to the Salk’ vaccine, and Koprowski vaccine had been used by the Poles.—Yours, etc., P.J A. January 16, 1964.
