Telephone Books

Sir.—A news item in “The Press” recently stated that delivery of telephone directories was about to be made and that where possible these would be put in letter boxes and others on front doorsteps. During rain those on doorsteps would become a soggy mess and the leaves all stuck together. Some will be out for more than a day. They should be delivered into the hands of subscribers who have the right of a clean directory. It would take a little longer but is the decent thing to do. The “fling it on the step” attitude is just official brutality.—Yours, etc., E.K.B.

January 15, 1964. [The chief postmaster (Mr C. J. C. Simpson) said: “The delivery staff are being directed not to leave telephone directories in the open. I appreciate your correspondent’s concern and every care will be taken to ensure that directories are placed under cover when householders are absent. It is not practicable. however, for more than one attempt to be made to deliver directories to absentees. The delivery of 80,000 directories each weighing lib lljoz, is a major task. Each delivery officer will .deliver approximately two tons of books.”l Overseas Loans Sir,—ln the past the prompt filling of Government loan issues has always b< i taken by the Prime Minister as a

vote of confidence in the Government—we must now conversely assume that overseas investors have passed » vote of no-confidence in the National Party Government Also, if last year wc earned £4O million more in export income than we did the year before, and there were figures Iquoted by the Prime Min ster during the election campaign. why could not we .have repaid the £7.5 million owing and paid the other £7.5 million required f>r developmbent in cash or has that elusive £4O million already been gobbled up in an election year importing spree? Assuming that it was necessary to borrow the £l5 million why was it not borrowed from the World Bank las we were also assured dur- ■ ing the campaign the reason >we joined was to get access Ito cheap loan finance.— | Yours, etc..
