Hurdler To Teach
“The Press" Special Service HAMILTON, Jan. 14. A 29-year-old Olympic Games hurdler, Mr V. C. Matthews, has arrived from England to take up a position as a teacher at St. Paul’s Collegiate School, Hamilton. In 1958-59-60 he was a regular member of the British international athletics team. He represented England at the British Empire Games in Cardiff in 1958 and Britain at the Rome Olympics in 1960. Asked whether he intended to compete as a hurdler in New Zealand, Mr Matthews said he felt his work at the school and his responsibility to his family would not leave him sufficient time for competitive athletics.
