Scots Guards Band Felt “Proper Nits"
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 14. The band of Her Majesty’s Scots Guards marched up Auckland’s main street today—without playing a note.
A disgruntled bandsman commented: “This is highly irregular. “I have never known this to happen before,” he said. “We felt proper nits march-, ing up Queen street without our instruments.” The band was led by the Northern Military Districts Artillery Band to the Town Hall, where the visitors were given a civic reception. The Scots Guards Band, accompanied by the pipes and drums of the Ist Battalion, are under contract to Kerridge Corporation, Ltd. Asked why the band did not play going up Queen street, the musical director (Captain J. H. Howe) said: “It’s Kerridge Odeon’s idea. We were all ready to play. I suppose, though, they think it an honour for the artil-
lery band to play us up.” Mr N. J. Glover, for Kerridge Odeon, said his organisation arranged with the Auckland City Council that the Artillery Band would play the Guards up Queen sreet. He thought it would be awkward for the bandsmen to have to bring their instruments and then find somewhere to leave them while they attended the civic luncheon.
