DEATHS FROM ABORTION
N.Z. Figures For 1961-62
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, January 14. Abortion caused 20 per cent of all deaths in New Zealand due to maternal causes in 1961-62, according to the medical statistics branch of the Health Department.
The maternal death rate for this period from all causes, including septic abortion, per 100,000 live births was 33.7; excluding septic abortion the figure was 26.8 per 100,000 live births.
In figures for 12 countries in which New Zealand is not included, a World Health Organisation statistical survey on maternal mortality rates for 1961, shows that only one country, Sweden, among th» countries listei, has a rate lower than that of New Zealand. The Swedish rate from all causes for 1961 was 21 per 100,000. A spokesman for the medical statistics branch said that Sweden had facilities available for legal abortions Where abortion could be carried out legally it reduced the risk of death, he said.
