LICENCE AT PARK
‘Money-Making Only Value’ Four letters criticising the booth licence at Lancaster Park were received at last evening’s meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s management committee. Two of the letters were from Baptist associations. The Canterbury-Westland Baptist Association criticised the booth as having “no benefit apart from the sordid one of money-making.” The secretary of the Onawa Baptist Church, Mr G Coombes, stated that “many will be drinking as much as watching the cricket” and that the use of booths “could spread to other sports.” Mr A. Williams, a member of the management committee, said in reply that the booth had been well run, and that comments received indicated that this had been a forward move.
Mr J. C. Saunders said that the booth had not affected the cricket and that if it were abused it would not be permitted.
Mr A. E. L. Britten said that it is better to obtain refreshments in an orderly fashion than if they were obtained outside the ground.
