Bank Charges
Sir, —Recently I opened an account with the Canterbury Savings Bank and find that the bank will pay my monthly building society subscriptions and my quarterly life insurance premiums free of charge. Previously I had these payments made by my trading bank who charged me Is 6d a payment. I also learn that I can make deposits or withdrawals at any trustee savings bank in New Zealand without incurring the exchange charged by trading banks. As well as observing more reasonable hours for their customers, the Canterbury Savings Bank also provides postal facilities free of charge. If the Canterbury Savings Bank can provide these services free why not trading banks? There has been talk about trading banks reviewing their charges, let them do so but not to their own benefit. We need more trustee savings banks to give an efficient and cheap service to the community.—Yours, etc.
