Slow Drivers
Sir, —Publicity has been given to various breaches of traffic regulations during the holidays. One of the constant causes of overtaking is the “arm - hanging - out - the - window, centre-hugging-of-the-road, 40-miles-an-hour” driver. This lackadaisical, carefree fellow does not recognise the use of a rear vision mirror, nor does he recognise the right of other drivers who are on business, to use the road safely at 5055 miles an hour as conditions permit. Driving from Invercargill to Christchurch in one day, or on a daily trip return to Timaru, this type of driver is enough to drive you round the bend. Could I implore traffic officers to keep them off the white line and to the side at least another six feet. Too, I feel strongly the predominant cause of centre-road drivers is the inadequate width of bitumen on the Main South road. It does not cater for a large number of wide vehicles such as horse floats, buses, lorries, caravans—Yours, etc. BUSINESS MOTORIST. January 6, 1964
