ICEBREAKER IN DOCK
Replacement Of Tailshaft (N.Z. Pres* Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 15. Its port tailshaft broken, the United States Navy icebreaker Atka berthed at Wellington from the Antarctic last night. For many of her complement of 240 there was a welcome liberty. Today the ship went into the floating dock stern first to enable the floating crane Hikitea to get at the broken tailshaft. Conditions were perfect for the manoeuvre, which was being attempted for only the second time in the dock’s 30-year history'. A replacement tailshaft arrived from America for the Atka in a Cargomaster yesterday morning. It is not known exactly how the Atka broke her tailshaft, though it is considered to be partly due to ice and partly to fair wear and tear, as it had not been replaced for 15 years.
