Sutherland Estate
Sir, —As another old neighbour of the late Thomas Smart, I should like to associate myself with Miss Gale and Mr Shirlaw in their remarks. My property adjoined Smart's shingle pit and we were allowed to use a right-1 of-way over to picnic at the river by Bradbury's, a lovely spot. Invariably, we would be asked in to see Mr Smart’s latest acquisition. He spent most Christmas holidays in Westland looking for treasures. I remember how he used to mystify the children with his “vegetable sheep.” The bridge opposite his place bears his name. I think. He was a very kindly man, and a definite personality, and I would like to see his name perpetuated in the bush.— Yours, etc., HELEN M. GREENSLADE. December 14, 1963.
