WELL LEVELS MEASURED

Above Normal Or Normal

Ground-water levels in Canterbury were slightly higher than usual for the time of year when the quarterly measurement of well levels was made at the end of November. The measurements were made by Mr L. J. Brown for the Geological Survey, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. When the wells were previously measured, in early Sepetmber, the levels were very much higher than usual and in many cases at the highest level recorded since routine measurements began. Records at the wells where measurements are taken more often than quarterly indicate that the drop in level has been steady, with only minor fluctuations. Such a fall is usual for the time of year. In all parts of North Canterbury where measurements were taken, except in the immediate neighbourhood of Christchurch, tho November levels were slightly above normal for the time of year. In Christchurch, the levels were about the same as in previous years. In Mid-Can-terbury tho levels were slightly higher than normal, in the area south from the Rangitata to Timaru the levels were normal, while in the Waimate district the levels were again slightly above normal.
