SURVEY OF ISLANDERS
Auckland City Conditions I (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 16. A survey of the welfare of Cook. Niue and Tokelau ! islanders who are living in Auckland city would be made in May next year, the Minister of Island Territories (Sir Leon Gotz) announced today. The survey will be carried out by the School of Social Science of Victoria University which will co-operate closely with the Department of Island Territories. The survey team will be concerned with the housing of the island peoples living in Auckland. It was intended a team of up to 20 interviewers under the direction of Mr John McCreary, senior lecturer of the School of Social Science, would visit island homes in Auckland over a period of a fortnight. “There are now over 7000 Niue, Cook and Tokelau islanders living in New Zealand,” said Sir Leon Gotz. “Most of these live in Auckland city and various statements have been made in recent months regarding their living conditions,” he said.
