Spear Fisherman Mauled By Shark
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) ADELAIDE, Dec. 9. A spear fisherman, who was caught in the jaws of a big bronze whaler shark on Saturday, poked his fingers in the shark’s eyes until it released him.
The man, Rodney Fox, aged 23, is in Royal Adelaide Hospital recovering from severe chest injuries. Only his wife and mother
were permitted to see him today and he told them some details of the attack. Fox was competing in the South Australian spear fishing championships when the shark struck. He was hauled into a boat suffering chest injuries, a punctured lung, and loss of blood. His mother, Mrs J. Fox, said her son spoke only briefly of the attack. "Rodney said he was swimming around when the shark attacked," she said. The shark’s jaws closed over his body and would not release its hold. Rodney had to poke his fingers into the eyes of the shark before it would release its grip. “The shark then swam off, circled and made another attack, this time grabbing a float. "Rodney said he was pulled about 40 yards through the water and the shark made off with the float. “But he was eventually freed when twine on the float snapped.’ ’
