Vice Squad Makes First Major Haul
Three weeks ago the first anti-vice squad in the Christchurch police district was) formed at the Christchurch! Central police station. The! squad comprises a sergeant,! constable, and policewoman.; The high venereal disease, rate in the city and the influx each summer of girls of easy virtue and women of illrepute from other parts of New Zealand, coinciding with 1 the annual arrival of United, States servicemen, with headquarters in Christchurch, were two ot the reasons for! setting up the anti-vice squad. This week, the squad made, its first major catch—five constables. The constables were allegedly frequenting a; house occupied by two young women of ill-repute
They were not o<i duty and not in uniform. They have not been in the police force for long. One of the constables, a probationary member of the force, was dismissed yesterday. The other four constables have been suspended pending a Police Department court of inquiry. The officer-m-charge of the ' Christchurch police district iSuperintendent G. C. Urquhart) said last evening that ! he had no comment to make.
