Timber Shipments To U.K.
Sir, —I read with interest your news items concerning a shipment of radiata pine by H. Baigent and Company. Ltd., of Nelson, to the United | Kingdom, and that it was beI lieved to be the first ship-| ment of this kind to be made.' About 13 years ago, when I; was manager for an Australian timber exporting firm in Christchurch, a similar quantity of sawn radiata pine was shipped from New' Plymouth from a Taranaki mill to the United Kingdom. This consignment was made to Pilkington Bros.. Ltd., in the hope that the timber would be used for glass cases, but its ' trip through the tropics evidently made it too brittle ; and the shipment was not repeated.—Yours, etc., K. W. HOBBS. I November 20. 1963.
