RECOMBINED MILK
Big Savings Possible (N.Z. Pres, Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. The use of recombined milk for town milk supply in winter could save New Zealand £3.500.000 a year, said the head of the department of agricultural economics and farm management at Massey College (Professor W. Candler) yesterday. He was addressing the market milk week conference at the college. “For the dairy industry, this could mean an extra penny a pound of butterfat. £150,000 for extra economic and technical research, an extra £750.000 a year for the tuberculosis eradication programme. still leaving £750.000 a year of industry funds for establishing milk recombining plants in tropical areas.” he said. “For the consumer, this would mean an increased choice of dairy products. “For people with a special taste for milk in its present pasteurised and/or homogenised form, these products would still be available. at their true cost. “During the high cost months. recombined milk would be available at 4sd a pint,” he said. For the town milk producer who had to go on to factory supply, Professor Candler advocated compensation equal to the individual producer’s share of the town milk subsidy for a year.
