Rangiora’s Second Rose Bowl Win

Rangiora, for the second season in succession, yesterday won the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s Rose Bowl tournament, which ran true to form and finished in darkness. In the semi-final between Mrs Archer (Beckenham) and Mrs Mair (United), the Beckenham four started off well but soon wilted to let United take command and run out the winner, 14-7. The other semi-final between Mrs McHugh (Rangiora) and Mrs Vaughan was full of interest. Rangiora led 5-1 on the third head, but a four to Opawa on the next levelled the score. Opawa went to 7-5 on the sixth, but Rangiora rallied to be 9-7 ahead on the ninth.

On the tenth head Opawa took six shots and, with only two heads left to play, appeared to be in an unbeatable position. The Rangiora players remained unflustered and with excellent drawing took five shots on the next head to lead 14-13. On the last head Mrs Tanner, the Rangiora lead, drew right on the kitty but it was removed by Mrs Bell, the Beckenham lead, with a raking shot, Mrs Lendrum, Beckenham’s No. 2, tried to draw, but was too heavy, but luck was with her and she moved the kitty to be three up. Mrs Kolkman, the Rangiora third, saved two and with the skips failing to alter the head, the score became level. On the extra head Mrs Tonner again drew on the kitty but was robbed by Mrs Bell. Mrs Kolkman brought off a victory for Rangiora when she drew the shot. Mrs Petrie (Rangiora), who won the tournament last year, was eliminated in the third round by Mrs Archer. Mrs McHugh was left to carry the torch for Rangiora, and after four ends in the final against Mrs Mair, led 5-1. United rallied a little to be 7-4 down on the seventh head. On the next head United was holding four shots when Mrs McHugh took out one with her first and then drew close with the next only to lose the shot on a measure.

United came back, and on the eleventh head levelled the score 9-9. Rangiora took one shot an the last head to win 10-9. Results were:—
