Too Wet For Bees
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Nov. 14. During the recent spell of cold, dull and wet weather on the West Coast, bees have not been able to leave their hives to gather pollen. In spite of the fact that there are plenty of flowers about, this lack of pollen is affecting the brood of young bees, for most of the pollen gathered in the early part of the season is used in feeding the brood. A bee farmer said that to sustain his bees over the cold period he had put out a 701 b lag of sugar practically every day. Sugar gave no return of honey but a fairly good supply was needed to allow the young bees to build up their strength so that they could be ready for the peak part of the season after Christmas, he said.
