U.S. Professor In Russia (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) MOSCOW, November 13. Professor Frederick Etarghoorn. aged 53. chairman of the Soviet studies department of Yale University, who has been on holiday in the Soviet Union on a one-montih visa, was arrested several days agio for alleged espionage. United States officials said that Professor Barghoorn may have been arrested in retaliation for the recent arrest of the chauffeur of the Soviet delegation at . the United Nations. Tass said yesterday: “The Soviet State security organs recently arrested in Moscow for espionage American citizen Frederick Charles Barghoorn, who came to the Soviet Union as a tourist. An investigation is being conducted.’’ American Protest In Moscow the American Embassy delivered a “strong protest” denying the professor was a spy and demanding his “release forthwith.” In Washington, a Defence official disclosed today that “a representative of a foreign government obtained secret information about an intercontinental missile site early this year.” A State Department spokesman, announcing the development, denied that tire professor was engaged in spying or in any other im-
proper activities in the Soviet Union. A 10-man United States delegation is due to leave for Moscow tomorrow for negotiations on American-Soviet cultural exchanges, in which Professor Barghoorn has an interest. The American Embassy is pressing the Soviet Foreign Office for more details about the arrest. Officials have not been allowed to see him.
