Aust’s Davis Cup Players Beaten
iNJt. Press Association—Copyright) . SYDNEY, November 11. Two probable Australian Davis Cup players, F. Stolle and R. Emerson, were beaten in the quarter-finals of the New South Wales singles championship in Sydney last night.
The British No. 1. M. J. Sangster.. reached the men’s semi-finals by beating Stolle. the Wimbledon runner-up In a big hitting duel which ended shortly before midnight. after three hours’ play. Sangster wpo. 12-10, 11-0; 3-6. 4-4. Sanpster. who was No. 4 overseas seed, was down. 0-1 and 2-4. in the fourth -set. before winning it. ff-4. Sangster and Stolle served 37 aces between themSangster's win followed that of the American. R. D. Ralston, over the top seeded Australian. Emerson, earlier in the night. Ralston won, 10-8. 11-9. 8-6. and the match lasted 135 ' minutes. Ralston dropped his opening service game in each of the first two sets, and was 0-2 in the second set before winning it 11-9. Ralston became definite No. 2 singles player for the United States team to play Australia in the challenge round in Adelaide in December when his team-mate. F. Froehling, underwent an operation in Sydney for an internal abscess earlier last night Rain tonight washed out play in the championships before the last two men’s singles quarter-finals could begin. The matches —R. Taylor (Britain) v. C. McKinley (America), and N. A. Fraser v. K. Fletcher—were postponed until tomorrow.
