RACING Dacron Impressive In 9f Gallop

Dacron, a hack from Trentham, appeared to take on the qualities of a galloping machine when he reeled off five furlongs in 58 l-ssec on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday.

This track is very fast when it dries out, and it has made many moderates look like good horses. But Dacron's run yesterday came after a sound race for fourth on New Zealand Cup day, and could be a pointer to something better on the last day of the meeting. Dacron was ridden by D. Goss and was accompanied by Tahi tP. Meier), which was three-quarters of a length back at the end. Dacron ran his last halfmile in 47sec. Latei’ in the morning Dacron’s stablemate, Llanmai (Wylie), sped over five furlongs in 59 3-ssec. and the last fbi.tr in 47 4-ssec. It was a brilliant solo run by this fit Caltex Stakes candidate. Baloo (Waerea) carried a big weight over five furlongs in 60 l-ssec, the last four in 48 3-ssec. He finished just ahead of Lady Lorinda (Dowling), which shaped promisingly, though with a big concession in weight. Of the lesser lights, none was more impressive than Silver Spire. This Invercar-gill-owned and trained- Kurdistan gelding was shading Candida (Hadfield) ending half a mile in 47 4-ssec.

Silver Spire was ridden by his race rider, J. M. Cappie. This was a successful com-

bination oin the first day of the meeting, and Silver Spire might be a better horse for that run. The Oaks favourite Cicada (Worrall) and Rely (A. H. Eastwood) ran a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec, quickening sharply for the last half-mile in 51sec. Royal Mile (W. D. Skelton) and Caplin (J. R. Dowling) were paired over nine furlongs. Royal Mile galloped scratchily early, but ran freely in the straight and won the gallop by three-quarters of a length in Imin 58sec. They ran the last half-mile in 49 4-ssec. Picket (Collins) rah nine furlongs in 61 l-ssec and the final half-mile in 49 4-ssec The Stewards' winner Bel-larook (Wright) recorded Imin 16 l-ssec for six furlongs and made it look easy. He has earned a start in the Caltex Stakes after' three wins in as many starts this season. Foxy Boy (Low) was just ahead of On Account (Col-

liris) after running seven furlongs, the last four in 50 2-5 sec. Canadiana (Mrs V. D. Clutterbuek) and Shiloko (W. D. Skelton) followed in 51 3-5 sec, with Canadiana holding to a short lead. Matador (Low) and Full Course (Wright) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30 1-5 sec, the last four im 50 l-ssec. After a sound race for third in the Hagley Handicap last Saturday, Matador will have solid backing in the Otaio Plate. Count Filou (Dodds) sprinted half a mile in 51 2-5 sec. He looks bright and well, but might- need some easing in the ground to have a chance in the Metropolitan Handicap. On the plough Newbrook (McCutcheon) dashed over five furlongs in Imin 1 3-ssec. the last four in 49sec. He appears to have thrived on his latest racing. Rondabelle (R. J. Skelton) led Carat (Traecey) by a length finishing seven furlongs in Imin 34 4-ssec, the last four in 52sec. Rondabelle is to be tried at a mile .and a half in the New Zealand Oaks tomorrow. Argus (McCann) was keen to quicken while running half a mile in 53 2-ssec.
