BURNSIDE H.S.
Accommodatio Needs
Accommodation had become a problem at Burnside High School, according to the principal (Mr C. Cross) at a meeting of the school’s board of governors, last evening.
Mr Cross was reporting to the board on the school’s need for new buildings as recently requested by the Education Department. He expected a roll of 1020 next year—loo more than this year. The assembly hall was too small now. Children had to go on the stage behind the staff at assembly to fit in. Those in the hall were packed in and were unable to stand properly because the seats had to be placed so closely together. Although four new classrooms were nearly ready, these would be used by the increased sixth form. The school had retained a higher percentage in the upper forms than he had expected, said Mr Cross. There would be about 100 in the lower sixth and 50 in the upper sixth next year. The school’s most urgent need was for classrooms. There was no administration block. Mr Cross said extensions to the music room to form a new site for the library, an extension of the staff room wall for a new staff workroom, extensions of staff room accommodation and the hall were needed. New buildings needed included a music room, a boy prefects’ room and bookroom to free rooms used for these for administration rooms, a new physics laboratory, a technical theory room and store, extra lockers, and the modification of the present library to form two social study rooms for senior classes, said Mr Cross. The question of the future size of the school and the possibility of limiting roll numbers arose in a discussion of Mr Cross’s report. On the motion of the chairman (Professor N. M. MacElwee) this was deferred till the next meeting.
